During a recent Rajya Sabha session, Jaya Bachchan voiced her objections to being referred to by her husband's name as a suffix and reprimanded the Deputy Chairman for the same. Here’s how netizens reacted to this incident.

Born Jaya Bhaduri, the actress-politician chose to adopt her husband Amitabh Bachchan’s surname following their marriage. However, when she was addressed by this surname during the July 29 parliament session, Mrs. Bachchan lost her composure and confronted Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Harivansh Narayan Singh.

Jaya Bachchan prefers not to be addressed by her husband's name. During the session, Mr. Harivansh Narayan Singh referred to her as "Shrimati Jaya Amitabh Bachchan ji" from a cue card, inviting her to speak. Jaya quickly responded, “Sir, sirf Jaya Bachchan bolte to kaafi hojata” (It would have been sufficient to call me Jaya Bachchan). The Deputy Chairman pointed out that he had used her officially registered name.

Jaya Bachchan then continued in Hindi, expressing her frustration, which can be loosely translated as: “There seems to be a new trend where women are identified by their husband’s name. Women are seen as having no identity or achievements of their own. This practice is just…”

However, many online users criticized her for raising this issue inappropriately. One user commented, “How can you claim that 'she has no achievements'? Mrs. Jaya Bachchan should remember that people tolerate her arrogance mainly because of her husband, Mr. Amitabh Bachchan!”

Another user, frustrated by the comments, said, “This comment section exemplifies everything wrong with this country,” reflecting the mixed reactions from the public.

Jaya Bachchan has been married to the legendary Amitabh Bachchan since 1973 and they have two children together: Abhishek Bachchan and Shweta Bachchan Nanda.
